XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) is the global standard for the digital exchange of business and corporate reporting information. It enables financial, sustainability and regulatory disclosures to be published in a structured, machine-readable format while remaining accessible to human readers.
Structured reporting has become an increasingly important component of modern capital markets. In the United States, structured reporting is widely used through the SEC’s EDGAR system. In Europe, structured reporting is known through initiatives such as the European Single Electronic Format (ESEF) and will play an important role within the European Single Access Point (ESAP), which is expected to become a central source of corporate and financial information across the European Union from 2027 onwards.
For investment professionals, structured reporting improves accessibility, comparability and usability of corporate information. It also supports automation, advanced analytics and the growing use of artificial intelligence in investment research and decision-making.
EFFAS and XBRL Europe
EFFAS actively contributes the perspective of investment professionals to discussions relating to structured corporate reporting, digital reporting infrastructures and capital market information accessibility.
EFFAS is represented in the XBRL Europe Consultative Committee by Dr. Bodo Kesselmeyer, Associate Member of the EFFAS Capital Markets Commission (CMC) and Chair of the EFFAS Corporate Reporting, Structured Data & Technology Working Group.
The objective of this representation is to ensure that the needs of investment professionals are reflected in the ongoing development and practical adoption of structured corporate reporting. Particular focus is placed on data quality, accessibility and comparability, supporting ESAP, and promoting the effective use of structured corporate data in automation, AI-enabled analysis and investment decision-making.
